How Bespoke Lighting Shapes Luxury Restaurants
The Role of Lighting in Luxury Dining
Luxury dining isn’t just about fine food and impeccable service—it’s about creating unforgettable experiences. The atmosphere lingers in the minds of guests long after their visit, with lighting a critical component in shaping the mood.
At Northern Lights, we’ve been crafting bespoke lighting for the hospitality industry for over 35 years, working alongside designers and restaurateurs to create award-winning spaces that are as visually striking as they are welcoming.
“All senses must be correctly stimulated to achieve an extraordinary dining experience,” explains Michael Jackson, Head of Design at Northern Lights.
“In upscale establishments, the use of lower, warmer lighting conditions, creates the perception of a more intimate dining experience. Diners are relaxed and comfortable, tending to eat at a slower pace, and are more content with the food and their overall visit."
Fine-dining restaurants often opt for several different lighting types to create the right balance of lighting in different areas. Layering allows for both functionality and drama. When correctly used it also highlights important design and architectural details to further add to the sensory appeal.”
Lighting: More Than Meets the Eye

Lighting goes beyond simply illuminating a space; it brings atmosphere, functionality, and personality to life. When done well, lighting helps guests feel relaxed and engaged, encouraging them to stay longer and savour every moment of their visit.
The Three Key Types of Restaurant Lighting
- Task Lighting: Provides practical illumination for specific purposes, such as reading menus or preparing food.
- Ambient Lighting: Sets the overall mood of the space, often achieved with overhead fixtures or natural light.
- Accent Lighting: Adds depth and drama, highlighting architectural features or creating decorative focal points with eye-catching fixtures.
Using these three types of lighting together helps create spaces that are practical, inviting, and stylish.
Here’s how we approach lighting for luxury restaurants and why it’s such a vital element of design.
Design Process
Using our proven design framework, our team works to understand all the elements of a scheme, right at the start of every project.
During scoping, we gather information on
- The wider environment
- Design intent & vision
- Architectural features
- Building restrictions
- Finishes and textures
Initial drawings and renders are created around the design concepts, outlining recommended materials, finishes and other elements following the discussions with our client, wider design team and artisans. Once agreed, any any samples of final details are signed off, we proceed to create highly detailed technical drawings for our production team.
Case Studies
In the historic Grade-I listed vaults of The Royal Exchange, The Libertine needed lighting that would honour the building’s heritage while creating a modern, luxurious atmosphere. Working with Studio Found, Northern Lights delivered bespoke fixtures designed to highlight the space’s dramatic architecture, adding warmth and character throughout.
Inspired by the beauty of Swedish Christmas lights, this stunning chandelier was engineered by our designers and fabricators to float effortlessly in mid-air, with only 14 fine suspension wires. We used used mild steel to construct the arms to maintain structural strength, keeping each arm floating in space as straight and true as possible.
The unique statement ceiling light was individually crafted to create a fluid and natural cloud-like form to fill the purpose-built ceiling void. The key challenge was to retain fluidity, requiring our artisans’ expertise in shaping and affixing each mesh panel to create an uninterrupted form that evokes emotional response. A rainbow wall light echos the brands' logo, greeting diners with a colourful lighting display.
Housed in a venue steeped in history, Cut & Craft needed lighting that balanced opulence with subtlety. Working with Studio Two, we created discreet lighting solutions that highlighted the building’s original features, paired with statement fittings in antique brass and bronze to reflect the rich, decadent design concept.
Furna offers a warm, intimate fine-dining experience that demanded equally thoughtful lighting. Our bespoke designs added texture and softness to the space, enhancing its welcoming atmosphere and complementing its contemporary yet timeless aesthetic.
Inspired by the dual nature of Mount Fuji, KOYN’s design required lighting that could tell a story. From serene, zen-like spaces to bold, fiery interiors, our custom lighting fixtures helped bring the restaurant’s narrative to life while adding elegance and focus. The most iconic fixtures are the wall sconces with tapered textured glass cones. The glass-blown cones resemble icicles, held in place using laser-cut brass support bars, and beautifully expand on the design narrative whilst adding soft illumination.

Tips for Specifying Lighting in Luxury Restaurants
- Think Beyond Functionality: While practical lighting is important, we consider how the light can influence the space and emotional response. Warm tones create a relaxed atmosphere, while cooler colour temperatures can feel more vibrant and dynamic.
- Layer the Lighting: Using a mix of task, ambient, and accent lighting helps create depth and highlight different areas of the space.
- Celebrate the Architecture: Lighting can be strategially used to draw attention to a venue’s unique features, like vaulted ceilings or intricate woodwork.
- Adapt to the Time of Day: Combine lighting with smart controls or dimmers that allow for seamless transitions from daytime dining to evening ambiance for ultimate flexibility
