Originally completed in 1827 and designed by renowned architect Sir Charles Barry, Buile Hill Mansion is a Grade II-listed landmark that has been carefully restored following more than 25 years of dereliction.

Now reimagined as a hospitality, events and wedding destination, the building combines civic function with contemporary ceremony and leisure spaces, bringing new life to one of the city’s most significant historic properties.

Lighting Scheme

Working alongside SpaceInvader and in coordination with City Electrical Factors (CEF), Northern Lights supplied decorative lighting throughout the scheme from our Luxury Signature Collection. Designed and handcrafted in Chesterfield, UK, the lighting plays a key role in unifying the mansion’s restored interiors - bringing warmth, atmosphere and continuity across its reception areas, café, bar and ceremony suites.

Reception & Lower Floor

Throughout the entrance, galleried staircase, reception, and corridors, Alberta wall lights in a matt black finish provide continuity across the scheme. Their understated up-and-down illumination complements the Georgian-inspired palette, helping to unify while offering a discreet architectural presence.

The Grand Staircase

At the heart of the mansion, the sweeping restored staircase forms one of the project’s defining architectural features. To enhance the drama and verticality of the space, Alberta wall lights were combined with a sculptural pendant composition featuring Viola, Xavier and Hestia glass pendants are suspended above the stairwell in a carefully staggered arrangement.

Finished in anthracite, smoke and teal tones, the pendants introduce contrast, colour and material variation while creating a striking focal point visible across multiple floors. Their differing silhouettes and layered positioning bring a contemporary sense of movement to the historic setting, echoing the grandeur of the original staircase feature once housed within the mansion.

Secret Garden Café & Bar

Within Secret Garden Café and adjoining bar, Castor wall lights introduce layered ambient lighting through a combination of white alabaster shades, antique mirror detailing and handcrafted metalwork finished in an oiled bronze patina. The space is designed for flexible day-to-night hospitality use, balancing warmth and comfort with a richer, more atmospheric evening character.

The Potter Suite

The Potter Suite - one of the mansion’s principal ceremony and function rooms - combines restored architectural detailing with a softer, contemporary interior palette.

Here, Solti twin arm wall lights pair elegant Georgian brass finished metalwork with clear fluted glass to create subtle texture and soft illumination. Their timeless character complements the restored mouldings and neutral finishes, reinforcing the balance between heritage and modern hospitality functionality.

The Olive Room

In the more intimate Olive Room, Bartok wall lights and a matching four-arm chandelier create a softer, residential atmosphere suited to pre-ceremony preparation and smaller gatherings. The layered lighting introduces warmth and intimacy while maintaining consistency with the wider interior scheme.

The Kingslea Suite

Arras twin wall lights featuring alabaster detailing were used throughout the Kingslea Suite, bringing soft, diffused illumination to the main ceremony and event spaces.

Their gentle tonal quality complements the suite’s refined interior palette, enhancing the sense of occasion while maintaining a calm, balanced atmosphere across both ceremonial and circulation areas.

From dramatic glass pendant lights to heritage-inspired bronze wall lights, the project demonstrates how decorative lighting can support both architectural restoration and contemporary hospitality experience. The carefully considered and cohesive lighting scheme enhances the mansion’s renewed identity while respecting its historic character.
