Northern Lights shares a regional familiarity with Rivendale Lodge Retreat as both reside in the rolling hills of the beautiful Peak District, so our part to play in this brief was enticing and was assisted by our collective knowledge of our picturesque surroundings.
The lodge itself has been designed to draw inspiration from the natural beauty of its locality, as well as the steep history of Ashbourne and the industries that it has been famed for throughout the years.
Our interpretation of the brief set for Rivendale Lodge Retreat was to design and manufacture lighting that complemented the rustic aesthetic applied by Lazzeri Creative Interiors. The area of Ashbourne has a history of copper mining which inspired our designers and artisans to use beautifully curated satin copper on some of the bespoke fittings, which in turn told a subliminal story to the lodge’s guests through innovative design and situational awareness.
The satin copper fittings include beautifully perforated rolled tube wall lights with a white internal fabric diffuser that can be found situated throughout various parts of the lounge and restaurant areas. Scattered throughout the restaurant are matching table lights that benefit from the same perforation that create a subtle diffused light pattern. Taking inspiration from some of our renowned mid-century modern fittings, our designers formed ideas for beautiful prismatic globe pendants that utilise intricately ribbed handblown glass. Warming copper spun pendants are situated above almost every table throughout the restaurant, which ties the theme of copper mining together brilliantly. We also designed and manufactured the elegant picture lights that have been used to enhance classically illustrated posters that depict holidays in the Peak District.
Our main feature pendants drew inspiration from the incredible natural landscape that surrounds Rivendale Lodge Retreat. Situated at either end of the verdant restaurant, our handcrafted brushed brass ‘branch’ pendants have been decorated with perfectly intricate leaf motifs that reflect the presence of the Peak District’s lush forestry. The inspirational fixtures provide a calming light through the use of pygmy lamps that are housed within handblown glass orbs. Suspended from matching brushed brass ceiling plates, the form of these fixtures follows a similar pattern to our exploration of nature’s influence on our designs. The structure of the pendants complement perfectly the well-configured use of hardwearing oak furniture in the restaurant beneath them.
A point of difference came in the form of signage for the elaborate bathrooms. The laser-cut steel plates that formed the ‘ladies’ and ‘gentlemen’ signage were entirely inspired by the nearby historical Tissington Trail Railway Line. Our modern take on the traditionally designed railway signs was yet another subtle nod to the surrounding areas that paints a picture of what is on the horizon in this perfectly situated lodge. Accompanied by vintage suitcases, rich emerald green walls and tiling, as well as copper washbasins and countrified shaker toilet doors, the bathrooms pay homage to British heritage through the use of well-executed design elements.
