A Night for the Design Community

Guests from some of the UK’s most respected design firms joined us for an evening of networking, inspiration, and hands-on creativity. With prosecco, cocktails, and chef-prepared canapés flowing, the atmosphere was both social and inspiring - a space where ideas and connections came together.

A Journey Through Glass: From Historical Origins to Modern Design

The evening began with a fascinating talk from our Managing Director, Donna Bruce, who shared the origins of stained and fused glass, and little-known facts that shaped the future of these crafts.  These glass techniques have long been integral to architecture and design movements. Their ability to transform light and emotion connects directly to the principles that underpin our work today.

Northern Lights’ origin story is strongly rooted in stained glass.  We began life as a small family business, with artisans creating stained glass windows for churches and later for traditional pubs - a legacy that continues to influence our craft today, as fuse apply age-old techniques with modern principles to craft bespoke lighting that inspires.

Glass in Contemporary Hospitality Projects

Designer Nicole Almond, and Michael Jackson our Head of Design, offered an insider’s look at how we incorporate traditional glass techniques into bespoke lighting projects. They presented two standout cruise ship projects: one highlighting stained glass, the other fused glass, along with samples and prototypes developed for each.

Their talks explored not just the artistry, but also the functional and developmental processes that ensure these intricate details meet the demands of modern hospitality environments.

The Workshop

The highlight of the evening was an interactive workshop where guests designed their own unique stained glass and fused glass pieces. This hands-on activity sparked curiosity and imagination, showing how traditional crafts can be reinterpreted for modern interiors.

This spirit of blending heritage and innovation is central to our approach to bespoke lighting design, where artisan techniques meet contemporary application.
