The Landmark London

From the outside, its archetypically Victorian façade immediately gives away the building's roots as one of London's grand railway hotels – one of several constructed during the golden age of steam travel; the other tell-tale clue being its adjacency to Marylebone station.

Summary

Inside, all the trappings of modern luxury expected at five-star properties ease you back into the 21st century. The beating heart of the hotel is the grand atrium with its Winter Garden restaurant and elegant public spaces.

Fittings supplied

Porte cochère lanterns.

The glass ceiling of the eight-storey-high atrium allows natural light to stream in and resulting in a similar feel to Kew's Palm House.

Northern Lights were honoured to realise the concepts of Alex Kravetz Design to create porte cochère lanterns for the iconic hotel's entrance. These lanterns continue the high standard of design by Alex Kravetz, having configured the interiors of some of the world's most exclusive hotels, including The Dorchester in Mayfair. To realise Alex's vision for the Landmark Hotel, Northern Lights had to consider the historical traits of the venue and work from a brief that included specifications for a wide variety of classical designs.

These port cochère lanterns were intricate to engineer and detail for external use. We sourced suitable castings in two different sizes for the small and large designs, and soldering work was avoided as much as possible to maintain the high-quality satin brass finish and joints required. To achieve this, we constructed a laser-cut subframe to connect the top and bottom casting sections to the main framework, pulling the panels together with concealed tie bars.  This method hugely reduced the risk of warping from heat methods, and visible fixings were hidden with cover plates or colour matched clench studs. The lamp holder structure was protected with a full cover plate to the top of each lantern to prevent water ingress, and IP junction boxes were supplied for sealed electrical connections.

The lanterns were finished in a rich antique brass patina to stand out from the surrounding black iron fretwork that embellishes the canopy.
