Summary

Boasting a staggering 785 guestrooms, London's Strand Palace is one of the Capital's most sought-after hotel stays. The substantial update is part of a multi-million-pound investment that has seen the hotel take onboard the transformation of all guestrooms and public areas. David MacRae, General Manager of the Strand Palace, has been delighted with the results: "Ever since we first opened our doors in 1909, the Strand Palace has put the guest experience at the forefront of all we do. The new ground floor, along with the new guestrooms is set to offer our guests the best experience possible right here in the heart of London, and we are eager to reveal this project during Summer 2019."

Fittings supplied

Flush pendants to the concourse, fibre optic pendants to tearoom and co-working area, wall lights to the bar, dining area, lift lobby and public areas, ceiling pendants to the reception desk.

After winning this prestigious project from intense competition, Trevillion Interiors Limited has worked with the Strand Palace Hotel for several years, working on the new designs that remain truthful to the hotel's roaring twenties Art Deco heritage but with a contemporary twist.

Frances Blackham, Design Director at Trevillion Interiors Limited, said: "We were delighted when the hotel allowed us to put a concept together for the design of the public areas. The Art Deco heritage has influenced our design process, so what we have done is allowed Art Deco in its original format to influence our thinking; we've thought about precise perpendicular lines, geometry, colour palettes and added a little bit of glamour for the London lifestyle. And those elements have been integrated into a more contemporary approach."

Subtle Art Deco influences are integrated into a contemporary design detail and sophisticated colour palette, with bespoke carpets, light fittings and joinery all carefully showcased within a serene, light and uplifting environment, creating a relaxed and tranquil atmosphere. The new public spaces have been designed for guests to enjoy as flexible lifestyle areas, where they can relax or work wherever they choose.

Northern Lights were privileged to play a part in the historic establishment's renovation working with the brief from the design team at B.M. Trevillion to realise and manufacture their bespoke lighting concepts throughout a range of the hotel's public spaces.

Utilising our numerous in-house manufacturing processes and skilled fabricators in glass and metal, our designers worked closely with Trevillion to enable their vision for the bespoke lighting in this stunning scheme.

Art Deco influences are incorporated into the glass reeded wall lights in the lift lobby, bar and public areas. Finished in warm bronze and brass patinas sympathetic to the period, the lights enhance and highlight columns and recesses.

The concourse features a line of five feature pendants – flush rings finished in matt black and brass – again evoking the Art Deco feel of the space. An acrylic diffuser softens the effect of the LED lights installed to work with the Dali dimming system the designs to the public area pendants required.

The statement pieces were the two 1.8, and 2-metre diameter silk-covered drums with gold lining in fuchsia and black to the tearoom and co-working areas, with an interior populated with hundreds of brass and acrylic capped tubes of varying heights, illuminated with end-lit fibre optic tails.

The reception pendants were supplied with reeded clear glass tubes, fixed with decorative gallery screws to an inner domed satin brass tube housing a GU10 spotlight.  These were suspended on matching brass drop rods from the ceiling to create a focus over the reception area.
