Northern Lights have developed and supplied bespoke lighting solutions to the UK giant, Whitbread, for over 20 years. JSJ Design has been a big part of this process, often challenging us with unique briefs to continually add value to their famous hospitality brand, Premier Inn.

A stunning large-scale feature installation that could be seen from outside the main entrance was high on the list when it comes to the hospitality lighting package - especially in an age where every hotel and restaurant needs something that is ‘grammable’. Situated above the lobby lifts in the main atrium is the feature chandelier featuring a staggering 7m drop. The bespoke pendant is compromised of thousands of laser-cut stainless steel stars, each hand-rolled to create a truly bespoke look. High output RGB LED allowed Northern Lights to light down to the bottom of the feature while giving the flexibility of changing colour scenes.

The tall atrium space meant that there was a risk of it feeling cold and empty. However, filling the floor space with soft furnishings and bringing the ‘oversized’ bespoke lighting down to a lower level, JSJ Design created a warm, welcoming and relaxing space. Because of the low height of the bespoke decorative lighting, a high-quality custom finish was vital. We worked with JSJ Design to create a finish that complemented the other tones used in the rest of the design scheme.

The two large bespoke ring lights were a real challenge. The extension on the arm support was so huge; there could be some potential stress points. Being a UK lighting manufacturer, we used our manufacturing capabilities to test, prototype and quickly come up with a solution that allowed the client to suspend the rings without the need for excessive ceiling drops.
