The Park Lane, Meadowhall
The Harris Partnership
Taking on the task to transform the Park Lane area into a premier shopping area, The Harris Partnership wanted a group of large-scale bespoke lighting features for the foyer spaces. The primary requirements in the design brief were: the bespoke chandelier needed to connect upper and lower shopping areas, and secondly, it needed to have a genuine impact on visitors. After comparing a few options, the final design brief called for a series of mass installations of delicate abstract shape suspensions. Northern Lights was given the job to bring the idea to life.
The Harris Partnership and BDP Lighting designed these new bespoke chandeliers. Northern lights were chosen, as the UK lighting manufacturer, to create these breathtaking bespoke chandeliers due to our experience working in retail lighting. The bespoke chandeliers have taken centre stage in the newly refurbished Park Lane area of Meadowhall Shopping Centre – one of only six super-regional shopping malls in the country.
Working through the inspirational images from The Harris Partnership, our designer team then developed a template for the abstract shapes. A mixture of polished stainless steel, clear acrylic and frosted acrylic materials were selected to add depth. Each shape was then cut with our laser cutter to achieve the abstract geometric forms. More than 14,000 forms in total were suspended on the ultra-thin wires which were further enhanced by 21,000 clear crystals.
The ceiling plate sub-structure was constructed in aluminium with a mirror-polished trim plate reflecting the suspension drops. Getting the right quantity of suspensions to achieve the proper density was a result of constant testing and development.
Eight bespoke chandeliers were installed in the main hall with another one at the mall entrance. Each bespoke chandelier rains down from the glass roof, which from a distance makes them look like blocks of light with shimmering details and from closer up the leaves appear to be ethereal, almost floating in the air.
The installations are illuminated by precise, narrow beam LED luminaire light projectors, which were specified by BDP Lighting. This allowed the bespoke chandeliers to catch the light rays throughout its entire drop.
Since the refurbishment, the re-designed Park Lane area has attracted many aspirational lifestyle brands adding value to the vicinity through smart retail lighting and general redevelopment.
