Feature poppy pendant

The poppy pendant was specially commissioned by intu Metrocentre to commemorate the centenary of the outbreak of WW1. At 7m high and 3.5m in diameter, it comprises 60 huge illuminated poppies made from silk.

Inspired by the poppy image created by the designer, Northern Lights developed technical drawings which illustrated the 3D organic shapes and the layout of the poppies as well as the patterns to laser-cut the supporting frames. Once the frames were produced and assembled, they were hand wrapped in beautiful 'Poppy Red' silk, delivering a delicate look.

The poppies were positioned carefully on the ceiling plate to achieve the desired organic effect with a maximum drop of approximately seven metres.

Paying a lasting tribute to the brave servicemen and women, the pendant will become a permanent feature in the Red Mall of the shopping centre.

Commenting on the project, the Project Leader Rebecca Kenny from LRW said: '… Northern Lights have reliably delivered a pendant that not only exceeded the original brief but creates a poignant reminder of our past.'
