Belmond Cadogan

Once the favoured haunt of socialite Lillie Langtry (who previously owned part of the building) and Oscar Wilde, who was infamously arrested in room 118, the site has had a rich and illustrious past ever since it was built in 1887.

Belmond Cadogan has undergone a complete transformation, spanning four years, to restore the unique heritage of the site. The interiors have been renovated with a style that is contemporary and reflective of the hotel’s history — featuring surprising details alluding to people who’ve shaped its past.

We were delighted to work with both Russell Sage and GA design on the bespoke lighting for the public areas of this prestigious hotel.

GA Design International designed the 54 bedrooms and suites and reception, lift lobby and meeting areas. The aim was to evoke the spirit of a grand townhouse. The bespoke lighting reflected this with its scale and impact, without overpowering the unique features in the space. The reception area is dominated by their chandelier to the entrance which comprises of two large rings with bespoke spun shades finished in off white with a warm and luxurious gold interior.

Elegant table lamps adorn the reception desks, the candlesticks inspired by those carved from ebony and ivory in the 19th century, and created more ethically using brass, mixed metals and soft patinas. Completed with an open weave linen shade to create a warm ambience. The lift lobby area features a ring pendant illuminated with LEDs and finished with one of our bespoke antique brass finishes. The meeting rooms are illuminated by two large multi-arm brass chandeliers, this traditional design is framed by sheer voile drums, delivering a more contemporary feel to the room.

Russell Sage Studio, meanwhile, is behind the design of The bar and the restaurant, the latter comprising two separate spaces – one a stuccoed and panelled room inspired by Langtry’s  dining room and the other dressed with colourful paintings by artist Katy Jade Dobson – that come together to form a sophisticated backdrop for chef Adam Handling’s menu of updated British fare.

With a strong Art Deco influences the concepts and designs by Russell Sage Studio perfectly complement the opulent and luxurious bar and restaurant spaces. The two-tier feature chandelier comprises of forty-four crackled glass globes, housed by individual copper-spun pans. The frame of the extravagant bespoke centrepiece was handcrafted using mirror polished nickel.

Wall lights in the surrounding area complement the chandelier style and are finished in antique brass patinas with two different sized reeded glass spheres to illuminate the seating areas. In the bay seating areas, traditional handblown well glass shapes are completed  with hand formed copper detailing. These are suspended by polished nickel framework and result in a truly unique ceiling pendant.

The restaurant areas are framed by a series of wall light features which are embedded in the panelling. These comprise of hand blown reeded glass formed in the shape of a strawberry which is then silhouetted by a similar shape formed from polished nickel metalwork.

In the piano room, the wall lights are again framed by the panelling although this design sits proud of the wall and features an off centre dish which reflects the light back onto the wall creating a halo effect. The central chandeliers to the restaurant areas feature lead crystal tiers and hand cut oval textured glass on a tiered ring – both finished in polished nickel which was the specified finish for all these designs, as authentic to the Art Deco period and interior of the hotel.
