The Team

Hello, we are team Northern Lights. We work with you to design, develop and manufacture truly inspirational lighting solutions.

We do everything we can to ensure that you receive timely project updates and that your fittings are delivered on time and to budget.

Design

Architects' and designers' concepts have become more adventurous. As a lighting designer, I have employed new manufacturing techniques and innovative use of processes to produce unique designs.

– Michael Jackson,
Head of Design

Lee Grieve

Lighting Designer

what are your responsibilities?

My responsibilities include generating and developing concepts for production. I use a mixture of 3D CAD and rapid sketching to provide a fast turnaround in design proposals for client and sales approval. I work closely with the factory to ensure the most efficient methods of manufacture are implemented into each project.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

Northern lights is extremely fast paced, we often have only a few days to come up with a concept. It has to be produced on time, within budget and all while keeping in line with the clients brand image. I thrive on this pressure! There is nothing like trying to problem solve on the spot. Having the design made on site means I literally see them rolling off the line in a matter of weeks.

How did you get into design?

After finishing my Masters degree in product design, I joined a commercial lighting manufacturer in South Yorkshire. There I was responsible for designing high volume products. So when a position at Northern Lights came up, it was the perfect opportunity to get involved in a more creative role focusing on bespoke, decorative fittings.

What are your favourite fittings?

I personally like retro looking industrial fittings. Living in Sheffield makes me really appreciate that industrial heritage 'look'. I think the layout of the lighting is just as important as the fittings too. This is what makes me look up and really take note.

Allan Terry

Lighting Designer

WHAT ARE YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?

I design both bespoke and standard luminaires of all types for manufacture, liasing directly with clients as well as the internal sales team to provide a visual proposal/design of the required luminaire that meets the client vision by using 3D CAD software and sketching. I produce a variety of detailed manufacturing drawings for our factory to manufacture.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The creative freedom. The diverse work load means that there is a different design to produce each day, meaning no 2 days are the same.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO LIGHTING?

After my industrial design degree, I joined a commercial lighting design company from which I completed my LIA certificate. I joined Northern Lights in 2014 and absolutely love it.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FITTINGS?

I don't have a specific favourite light fitting, but I like the large scale sculptural pieces we provide. Knowing the level of engineering and man hours put into each piece shows the creative level we're able to achieve. These large scale pieces are visually impressive and tend to be a great focal point to where they're installed.

Natalie Shakesheff, Northern Lights

Natalie Shakesheff

Lighting Designer

What are your responsibilities?

To design light fittings for manufacture, working from enquiries fed from the sales team or clients directly. I use 3D CAD software to produce detailed drawings for client approval and manufacturing detail within our factory.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Every day is different with constant opportunities to challenge myself. We don't spend months and years designing light fittings for mass manufacture - we sometimes only have hours! I love the challenge of designing a light fitting that can be made, just from looking at a single reference image or sketch.

How did you get into lighting?

I applied for a graduate position at a commercial lighting manufacturer in South Yorkshire after leaving university. I learnt the technical aspects of lighting during my time there, but left to pursue other challenges at a Product Design and Engineering Consultancy. When the opportunity arose to move back into lighting which had a creative, decorative aspect, I knew it was the perfect position for me.

What are your favourite light fittings?

I like our industrial style pendants and caged exposed lamps on coloured and braided flex. I think they are a simple way of creating interest in a lighting scheme.

Michael Jackson

Head of Design

WHAT are YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES?

To manage and deliver accurate design interpretations of our clients concepts and to ensure a successful product or project outcome for all types of enquiries.

WHAT DO YOU ENJOY MOST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

I find working within the discipline of lighting presents a diversity of challenges and the task of bringing together the key factors of material, process, technology and light is both demanding and rewarding.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO LIGHTING?

- 7yrs + Conceptual Designer for a multidisciplinary design consultancy which had an associated Silversmiths studio. This provided me with an understanding and appreciation of commercial high volume product design and craft based manufacturing process techniques.
- 7yrs + Senior Product Designer for a commercial luminaire manufacturer designing for Industrial, Architectural, Retail and Domestic market sector applications.
- Northern Lights 10yrs +. My professional career path has equipped me with the experience, knowledge and appreciation of design aesthetics which has naturally transposed into the bespoke, decorative, hospitality marketplace.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE FITTINGS?

Lighting which inspires, lighting which makes you stop and think, lighting which challenges conventional perceptions of scale, material, construction and design context.
