The Great Room at Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel was given a distinctive yet sophisticated new look with a bespoke chandelier symbolising Marriott’s new ethos: ‘Travel Brilliantly’

It is always a challenging job creating a new feel for the refurbishment of an iconic hotel whilst retaining its classic charm. When ara Design International was asked to create the new scheme for the Paris Marriott Opera Ambassador Hotel, they had to take into account that the new interior had to reflect the Marriott’s new ethos: ‘Travel Brilliantly’.

Nonetheless with the help of Northern Lights bespoke chandelier – which represents a flock of flying birds, ara Design successfully re-designed the new hotel welcome area. This feature has already become a major conversation piece for guests new and old.

The purpose of the chandelier is to create an immediate reaction when the guests enter the hotel. ‘The key challenge of this installation’ said Allan Terry, Northern Lights lighting designer ‘is to make a large-scale fitting look seemingly weightless and the birds look like they are flying effortlessly.’ To achieve this, aluminium was specifically selected to make a lightweight ceiling plate. More than a hundred birds were hand-made from thin mild steel with various powdercoat and polished finishes. Locating the right positions to generate the desired density of birds took a great deal of calculation and adjustments. Each bird had then to be carefully suspended on a ultra-thin wire from the ceiling plate.

Measuring more than 5m long and 2m wide, the final result is an expressive, dynamic and striking centrepiece intended to give a subtle reminder of the luxury, comfort and brilliance Marriott brings to its customers.

Northern Lights also supplied bespoke three-tier chandeliers featuring a geometric fret-cut pattern and matching wall lights which blend the new design with the original Art Deco features of the hotel.

ara Design Associate Summer Mughrabi said ‘The feedback on the new Great Room at Marriott Ambassador Paris has been overwhelmingly positive and we are delighted with the final result. The flock of birds chandelier entices guests in to the hotel and creates a very strong impact at reception. It was great to be able to work closely with Northern Lights on such an unusual bespoke piece.’
